Bismarck, North Dakota. Lance Loken, President of Western Plains Consulting, is celebrating his 20th anniversary as owner of one of the area’s first locally owned full-service environmental consulting firms. Loken is a geologist/soil scientist and a nationally recognized expert in environmental assessments. Loken began his business out of a basement, and has since expanded WPC to several employees working on projects that have included a mulit-million gallon diesel fuel spill in Mandan and a successful representation of landowners affected by a train derailment in Minot. That accident resulted in an anhydrous ammonia spill and a mass evacuation. Loken has consulted on numerous issues arising from the rapid oil industry expansion in western North Dakota. WPC, under Loken’s leadership, worked on soil and wetland issues related to emergency outlets designed to ease historic Devils Lake flooding. Loken managed wetland delineation projects required as part of the planned building of the Keystone pipeline. WPC is a past winner of the Best of Business Award as selected by the Small Business Commerce Association. WPC was also the recipient of the Soil and Water Conservation Society’s prestigious Business Stewardship Award.
